Touristic complex Hercegovačka Gračanica is the most visited religious objects in East Herzegovina.
It was constructed to honor the wish of the famous Serbian poet Jovan Dučić stated in his testament. He wanted to be buried on one of the hills that surround Trebinje in a church ‘resembling the one in Kosovo’ – referring to Gračanica in Kosovo, the most important legacy of king Milutin from 1321.
Jovan Dučić died on April 7, 1943, on Annunciation day. On that same day in 1999, on Crkvina hill, a foundation stone for Hercegovačka Gračanica was placed and consecrated. According to some sources, this was also the former location of a Church of St. Archangel Michael, in honor to king Milutin). Whole complex was finished a year later. On Annunciation day in 2000, 47 years after poet’s death, his remains were brought to Hercegovačka Gračanica.
Hercegovačka Gračanica is not identical to the one in Kosovo. It has one level less, and the interior is also slightly different. The church was built in Byzantine style and painted with so-called ‘secco’ technique (dry painting), under strong influence of the famous Greek icon painter Stamatis Skliris.
Inside the church there are 16 pillars, out of which 15 are square-shaped and one is round-shaped, carrying special symbolic meaning. In its base there is a stone from Kosovska Gračanica which is a symbol of ‘home cornerstone’, carrying the spirit of ‘old home’ to ‘new home’.
The floor of Hercegovačka Gračanica is a replica of mosaic from Prizren monastery of St. Archangels (Metohija), legacy of emperor Dušan the Mighty, and it also carries important meaning. On the church floor there is a ‘dragon’ which represents the ‘devil’, so everyone who enters will step on the unholy, thus denying him.
The iconostasis is a convincing replica of the one from monastery Hilandar on Mount Athos. It was made in monastery Tvrdoš.
Poet’s grave is on the right side of the church, with a simple writing ‘Jovan Dučić – Poet’, just like he wanted.
Within the complex there is also bell tower, episcope court, amphitheater, souvenir shop and summer restaurant ‘Dučić’s View’.
With time, Gračanica has also become popular for wedding ceremonies. One of the most impressive prayers in the church is the ‘Marriage at Cana’.
Church of St. Clement (better known to locals as “Klimentica”) is the typical small Mediterranean medieval church, made of stone. It is placed on the right shore of the Trebisnjica River, in the village Mostaći and is considered one of the oldest churches in the area. The church is interesting because of its paintings inside. Thanks to its rich decoration (it was painted during the period of Turkish occupation of this area), the church today has a status of cultural-historical monument.
This church is located on the top of Elijah’s hill in the village of Mesari, north of the road Trebinje-Mostar, 20 km from Trebinje on the edge of Popovo polje. It has three semi-rounded apses, which were reconstructed several times, most recently in 1897 according to the inscription on the supporting beam. This church has a pre-Roman style, so it is considered to be the first church built between 9th and 11th century. It is one of the oldest buildings in Herzegovina. Church of St. Elijah, together with ancient tomb tumulus and necropolis with ‘stećak’ tombstones in Mesari, it was listed as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2008.
Architecturally, Strač is one of the most interesting old fortifications, as well one of the biggest in the whole Balkan. It located south east of Trebinje with the elevation of 750m. It has a beautiful view of Zupci, Petrovo polje, Trebinje and Trebinje forest.
During the Austro-Hungarian period, Trebinje was one of the most protected cities. Each hill above the city had a fortification from which a potential attack could be seen so the people could be alarmed and respond to it. Unlike others, Strač was buried under ground for the major part, and because of this it is considered the most mysterious object of that time.
The symbol of power of this fort is represented in its iron cannon domes on the top, which still resist the imminence of time, but human negligence as well, which caused significant damage to the object.
It is interesting that Austrian experts have converted the then currency crown to today’s Euro, and calculated that the construction of this fortification cost the astonishing 60 million Euros.
It is believed that the old town of Trebinje, together with the court of Helene de Anjou, was located at the place today known as ‘Brankovina’, which was named after Branković tower. This watch tower was very important back then. There are records of Herzegovinian origins of family Branković, which existed during the most prosperous time of Serbian state, in the period of kings Miutin, Stefan of Dečani and of course the king and the emperor Dušan the Mighty. It is believed that the Branković family is the last Serbian medieval dynasty, who ruled from the first half of 14th to the second half of 16th century. Tower was built by the county ruler Mladen, founder of the family and lord of Trebinje and Dračevica. Family’s last name comes from Mladen’s son Branko, and the tower was named after him as well.
The remains of the medieval town Mičevac are located on the right Trebisnjica bank, very close to Perovica bridge settlement. According to the legend, it was named after Duke Mičeta who built it.
It is comprised of two parts – fort and the town which was under it. Being constructed on the higher ground, the fort dominated the area, and the town was under it, serving as a sort of suburb.
According to Lucarius, a chronic from Dubrovnik, Mičevac is first mentioned in 1402. The town was very important strategically because it protected the communication between Dubrovnik and its background. There are records of customs offices in Micevac from 1445 and 1451, which adds to the fact that this was an important trade and economy center back in those days.
Town of Micevac is listed as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Klobuk was one of the most magnificent medieval town forts in this area. Its remains are located 30 km from Trebinje. The town is positioned on steep cliffs that are looking to Susica river, and it can be approached only from the west side – from the road leading from Trebinje to Niksic.
Byzantine emperor Constantine VI Porphyrogennetos mentioned Klobuk as a town fort more than 1000 years ago.
Klobuk was physically destroyed in 1878 by Austrians who pillaged it and destroyed it, so only the dilapidated walls remained to this day.
Klobuk was listed as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006.
In the recent times, Klobuk was popularized in the movie ‘On the Milky Road’ (good part of the movie was shot at this location) by the world-famous director Emir Kusturica. Monica Bellucci, one of the world’s most famous movie divas, was a leading actor in the movie.

Lastva is 13 km away from Trebinje to the east, on the way to Nikšić. It is located on the shore of lake Lastva and offers many attractive locations for picnic, barbecue, and other activities in nature. The lake is also very rich with fish and it is the favorite destination of many local fishermen, where they gather every year at the official opening of the new fishing season.
Only 20 km away from Trebinje in the background of world famous tourist destinations (Dubrovnik, Herceg Novi, Kotor), as a part of Orjen mountain massif and on 1100 m latitude, there is a place called Ubla. Together with Studenac, it is considered the favorite weekend location for all local citizens.
This picnic area offers extraordinary terrain characteristics for winter sport recreation, enjoying in nature and picnic tourism. It also ideal for those who seek peace and escape from everyday life, rest in the shade of evergreen forest and direct contact to nature.
This is also the location of traditional manifestation ‘From the Rebellion the Freedom Was Born’, honoring folklore and tradition with various cultural and art activities. During the summer season cultural and sport activities are organized every weekend.
On the west end of Popovo polje, 300 meters to the east of monastery Zavala, there is a cave called Vjetrenica. It is the most famous cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina, protected as a natural monument, and it is a well-known tourist destination in this part of Herzegovina. About 6700 meters of underground water system have been discovered in it. This cave is special in numerous ways: spacious halls, sediments, abundance of water systems – lakes, waterfalls, large streams and tens of smaller ones which flow in various directions. Perhaps the most impressive is the strong wind on the entrance, which can be also felt inside, as well as the collapsing of ceilings that have been happening since the earliest times. Vjetrenica is equally interesting in ecological, geomorphological and economic sense, and at the same time it is one of the most distinctive objects in whole Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has been on the list of protected natural monuments since 1950, and in 1981 it was proclaimed a natural geomorphological reservation. It is also famous for being the habitat of an endemic aquatic salamander called olm (‘human fish’).
Sušica is a tributary of Trebišnjica. It is about 15 km east of Trebinje. With its emerald green water and plenty of fish, it is very convenient for swimming and fishing. There is also a mysterious Roman bridge Vučija on it, as well as beaches and camping sites for nature lovers.
The olm is the only amphibian in Europe that lives in caves. This salamander from the family of ‘proteidae’ is a Dinaric Alps endemic species which lives in underground lakes and quiet underground streams and rivers of the Dinaric karst. It can be exclusively found from northern Italy, Istria and costal Slovenia to Dalmatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are 46 underground locations where you can see the ‘white man fish’. Trebinje has the only olm observatory in the world. It is located in Vrtuljak cave in Gorica neighborhood. The purpose of it is to study and preserve this endemic species, as well as to popularize it for tourism purposes.
It is located in Hrupjela, a hill where a tower from Austro-Hungarian period was also located. It is dedicated to the holy archangels and together with Hercegovačka Gračanica it beautifully overlooks the city, offering a unique view of the whole Trebinje.
Village Mrkonjići is on the east side of Popovo polje on the route Trebinje-Ljubinje. In this village on December 28, 1610 holy father Vasilije of Ostrog was born. His birthname was Stojan, from mother Anastasija and father Petar Jovanović. On St. Vasilije of Tvrdoš and Ostrog day, May 12, 1998, a church dedicated to him was opened in the village. The temple was constructed on the foundations of this holy man’s birth house and it is located on the right side of the road from Trebinje. On the left side of the road the church of St. Nicholas is located and that is where Vasilije was baptized. There is a cemetery by the temple where his mother St. Ana rests.
Besides many successes in the food industry, “Swisslion” Company is expanding own business to tourism and catering. Their first catering object, the only thematic hotel in BiH, called “SL Industry” hotel was opened in April 2017.
Two month later, The East Gate of “Grad Sunca” was officially opened. Eight hectares of Hercegovinian karst was enriched by a luxury hotel “SL Panorama”, Wellness & Spa center “Galley” and sport – recreational center “SL Olimp”.
Within the walls of “Grad Sunca” at the same pace, another big project is under construction and its opening is expected for May, 2019. It is a tourist resort “Bijeli Grad” with 160 apartments, National restaurant and congress center “Koloseum” with 600 seats.
It is expected of “Grad Sunca” complex to take up the area of 80 hectares upon completing all the phases of the project.
Monastery Zavala is on the edge of Popovo polje, under Ostrog mountain. There are no reliable sources about its construction date. According to tradition, church of Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary came into being during the first Christian Roman emperor Constantine the Great, who built a church in Slano and arrived to Zavala, where he saw that local people were religious and decided to build a church there.
The oldest written record is from 1514. It is a certificate of a vineyard sell to Seraphion, the abbot of the monastery.
This monastery has a specific position, so the architectural style is matching. It gives the impression of an ascetic monk home. The church is covered by a cliff from the north side which is also the base for its north wall.
The interior of the church was painted with frescoes in 1619 by a great Serbian painter from the 17th century named Gregorije Mitrofanović, who was also a monk in Hilandar monastery. A special place in the church is taken by icon of Emanuel (Jesus as a boy), painted under church’s dome.
St. Vasilije of Ostrog was also a monk in this monastery. He was born in a nearby village Mrkonjići, where a church was built in his honor.
This massif belongs to Mediterranean biogeographic region, and covers about 18.156 ha, with many important habitats – pit caves (not accessible to the public), forests, lawns, mountain pastures and meadows. This area is ideal for existence of important species, such as bears, wolves, rock partridge, and an attractive bird of prey – snake eagle. It is also famous for ‘munika’ – evergreen species from the family ‘Pinaceae’, which can only be found in Balkans. This massif is very convenient for so called ‘active vacation’ – nature field trips, hiking and mountaineering, as well as for speleology activities (exploring of caves and cave pits). There is also an initiative to make this area a national park.
Spring Studenac on Trebišnjica river in the most beautiful location within the city limits, and it has always been used for field trips, picnics, lessons in nature, etc. Old wooden wheel that was used for watering can also be seen at Studenac, and this relic of past provides a special charm to the visitors. This picnic ground is probably located at the most beautiful part of Trebišnjica natural river flow.

The monument to the famous poet and diplomat born in Trebinje was constructed in 1997. It is located in front of the main city (Dučić’s) park, right across the monument of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, so this square is also called Poet square.
About the poet
Trebinje was not only lucky to be the birthplace of a such great poet, but also because he left a significant legacy to Trebinje. He was one of those people who lived outside their town but who loved it and always came back to it. All of his assets as a poet and as a diplomat were left to Trebinje. Being a man of great knowledge and culture who lived in many world metropolises, he always felt nostalgic about his birthplace.
He was born in Trebinje on February 17th 1871 where he graduated from elementary school. His family moved to Mostar where he enrolled in Commerce school. He attended Teacher’s college in Sarajevo from 1890 to 1891 and he graduated in Sombor in 1893. He was a teacher for a short period of time in various places, most notably in Mostar from 1895 to 1899. He was also a member of ‘Gusle’ (Serbian national instrument) Association in Mostar, and together with Šantić he also started a literary club and magazine ‘Zora’ (The Dawn).
He departed for Geneva in 1899 to university studies. He studied the law on the University of Geneva, and then he returned to Serbia. In 1910 he was appointed as attaché in Istanbul office, and in the same year he moved to Sofia on the same position. From 1912 he worked as a diplomat in Rome, Athens, Madrid, Cairo and Bucharest. After time spent in these cities, he went to USA to Gary, Indiana.
He left his birthplace with a heavy heart, but he would always come back to it whenever he had a chance. He always loved his ‘dear Trebinje’, as he used to say, he dreamt and wrote about it. Collection of his poems and letters are kept in The Museum of Herzegovina.
Not only did he leave everything he had to his city, but he also used his own material funds to decorate it in both urbanistic and spiritual ways during his lifetime. His wish was to make a small ‘flower square’ so he sent evergreen plants from Italy by ship (today’s Jovan Dučić Park). There are also numerous other gifts, such as the fountain with statue of Cupid, statues of lions at the park entrance, monument of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, monument of Liberators, flower box which is now located in front of Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary… Dučić’s collection of ancient monuments was exhibited in The Museum of Herzegovina in 1996 (70 figures of stone plastic from Italy). National library has his collection of 5427 books, manuscripts, correspondences, diplomacy acts and his personal belongings. Those are mostly publications from the past times and among them there are many rare books that cannot be found in any other library in ex-Yu area.
He died in 1943 in USA. Prior to his death he wrote a testament which said ‘… a beautiful orthodox church is to be constructed, which would resemble Gračanica in Kosovo, where my body would be moved and buried.’
On the Annunciation on April 7, 2000 his last wish came true. His remains were transported from USA to Trebinje and they were buried on Crkvina hill, in Herzegovinian Gračanica, which was dedicated to ‘The Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary’.
In Jovan Dučić’s park, right across the Cultural center building stands the monument honoring fallen heroes of Trebinje area who fought fascism during World War II.
This monument was built in the place where 77 men and two women were hanged in World War I. It was unveiled on August 5, 1938 on 20th anniversary of the liberation of Trebinje. It consists of one remarkably beautiful statue of angel in Nemanjić style, made by a foreign sculptor according to Dučić’s sketches, one monolith pillar 4-5 meters tall and a compartment (pedestal base) with carved inscriptions. Dučić’s idea about good winning over evil is shown through the angel character with a drawn sword, as a keeper of peace and the freedom of the City, pressing his feet against a snake – symbol of evil, slavery and suffering.
Monument to this great poet was constructed thanks to Jovan Dučić, who bought the location from it from catholic church. It was unveiled on May 28/29, in the presence of king’s ambassador. The monument was made by the well-known sculptor Tomo Rosandić, who was an apprentice of the famous Ivan Meštrović. This is the first monument honoring Njegoš in the world. Granite compartment was made by Dragiša Brašovan, an architect from Belgrade.
In order to soften the harsh walls of the Old town, Dučić donated a baroque statue of queen Helen of Anjou. She is presented graciously and with a crown on her head.
Inscriptions on the black marble table say: ‘In the honor of Helene of Anjou, Serbian queen, wife of Stefan Uroš I, mother of kings Dragutin and Milutin. To the God-loving memory of her frequent visits to her home in Trebinje.’
The statue of the queen is symbolically extending the hand with which, according to the legend, she gave presents to local people during her visits to Trebinje, where she had a court. Queen’s hand is today kept monastery Tvrdoš in Trebinje.
This bridge is on the river Sušica, and connects an old Roman road which lead from Dubrovnik to Montenegero. It is believed it was built in 13th century together with nearby Vrm towers.
It is located between two cliffs, connecting two steep banks. It is a masonry stone bridge, and upper arches are made of tuff. Tuff layer is connected with half round arches, which gives a very nice and fitting look compared to the natural surrounding.
Perović (Arslanagić) bridge is the most famous monument from the Ottoman period in Trebinje and has a very important place in Balkan architecture of 16th century. Mehmed-Pasha Sokolović built the bridge 1574 in honor to his son who was killed in the battle with Venice. When Turks got pushed away from Herceg Novi in 1687, many Turkish families moved from this town to Trebinje. A certain individual named Arslan-aga was among them. He was given land east of Trebinje: Zupci, Necvijeće and Jasen, and was also put in charge of collecting fee people had to pay to cross this bridge. Since that, this bridge was named after him – Arslanagić (Arslan-aga) bridge. With the construction of hydropower system on Trebišnjica in 1965 the bridge got submerged under the newly created reservoir lake. However, in 1966 the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments requested the bridge to be moved upstream to the new location – between Gradina (right river bank) and Police (left).
Plane trees are one of the most recognizable symbols of Trebinje. The vicinity of today’s monastery of St. Peter and Paul, together with necropolis tombs, has been listed as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina since March 2003. The monastery is 7km away from Trebinje, in Petrovo polje. It consists of remains of the church of St. Peter from 4th century which lies under today’s church that was built in 1906, and also the remains of the church of St. Paul from 5th century, reconstructed in 2007.
Today’s church of St. Peter is typical for this area, has a simple base and modest dimensions, with stone covered apse, cobbled interior and wooden iconostasis.
The church of St. Paul is very close to the church of St. Peter, to the south. According to the available archive evidence, this church served as a temple for liturgies, while the three-apse baptistery (discovered in 2001) dedicated to Paul the Apostle was used for baptizing and burials.
St. Paul’s cave
Paul’s cave is located on the hill above the monastery of Peter and Paul. According to the ancient legend, St. Paul baptized local people in this cave.
Historical evidence is clear: St. Titus, St. Paul’s apprentice, baptized people in then Dalmatia and Liburnia. Road SCODRA – SALONA, which the first Christians used to travel to Rome, passed through the area of today’s Herzegovina, and one part passed through the valley under Paul’s cave. According to St. Epiphanius, St. Paul came to this area in 57 BC, and St. Luke in in 58. Archaeologists discovered first signs of Christian communities near Paul’s cave in the place called Panik, within the ancient urban complex, which had a mosaic of Orpheus with a sign of the cross on his right hand.
According to the legend, water from Paul’s cave helps women who cannot give birth, as well as those who still have not married.

Old town of Trebinje was formed because Turks needed organization of their territories in Herzegovina due to great changes in wars with the Holy league (1683-1699) – the fall of Herceg Novi and Risan under the rule of Republic of Venice.
It was built on the right bank of Trebišnjica, above the deepest part of the river – so called Ban-vir (vortex), named after a legend in which a ban (ruler) drowned in the vortex.
The most important person for the development of the Old town as a fort is Osman Pasha, founder of the Resulbegović family. He started the construction in 1714 but it was interrupted for a short time by the war with Venice. Builders were brought from Dubrovnik, and work force was from local area – Ljubinje, Cernica and Nikšić. During the next year a hendek (canal) was dug around it, which was connected to Trebišnjica. During Osman’s reign, Sultan Ahmed and Osman-pasha mosques were built, together with Sahat-kula (clock tower), which is still resistant to the many years that have passed.
Old town ‘Kastel’ was initially triangle-shaped and it became rounded over time. Its final shape, with all towers, canals and ramparts, was formed in the first four decades of 18th century.
In front of the entry gate (today’s tunnel) there was a draw-bridge that was leading across the canal. The canal was later filled and levelled due to a possibility of epidemic disease, as advised by doctor Levi. (1932)
Water is one of the most important natural resources of east Herzegovina. Trebišnjica possesses a vast unused potential, and it used to be the longest sinking river in Europe (98km). It is precisely in Trebinje where its beauty takes a full form.
Because of its still flow, Trebišnjica is more than suitable for sport activities. It is very clean and clear a has an abundance of fish, so it is very convenient for diving and fishing. It is home to some endemic species, such as ‘gaovica’ (species of ray-finned fish) and famous olm (proteus), which lives in underground river streams. There are also manty popular picnic places along Trebišnjica banks, the most famous being Studenac and Lastva.
Banks of Trebišnjica are intertwined with many bridges, and those standing out with exceptional beauty are Perović (Arslanagić) bridge, Ivo Andrić bridge and Stone bridge.
Trebišnjica streams flow through Gatačko, Cerničko and Fatničko karst fields, where they get lost in underground pits and reappear south of Bileća as Trebišnjica river. Its streams also appear as the source of Ombla – a river in Dubrovnik, and the biggest part of them goes through underground systems to Neretva.
Monastery Tvrdoš is located on the right bank of Trebišnjica river, 5 km to the west of Trebinje. It was built on the foundations of a church from 4th century and it is one the oldest cultural-historical monuments in Republic of Srpska. During 16th and 17th century Tvrdoš was the seat of Hum-Herzegovina – Trebinje episcopacy. During the Turkish-Venetian war the monastery was destroyed, and some relics were moved to monastery Savina (Herceg Novi) and monastery Duži. In 1992 the hand of queen Helen de Anjou, mother of kings Milutin and Dragutin, was moved from Duži to Tvrdoš.
The monastery is also famous for the fact that Vasilije of Ostrog was tonsured in it, becoming a priest. After that, he spent some time serving as a parson of Popovo polje. That is the reason he is called ‘Of Ostrog and Tvrdoš’.
Rebirth of the monastery started in 1955 when the whole complex was renovated. Special characteristic of today’s church is its glass floor, which in a way offers a ‘window to past’, because foundations of the church from 4th century can be seen through it.
Long tradition of wine making which dates back to 15th century has been successfully preserver to this day, thanks to new vineyards, wine cellar and modern winery.
